Advertisements and NBA Premium

Advertisements have really taken over the small screen and even the big screen. Everywhere you go you see them from billboards, to flyers, to commercials, to websites and more. I watched a movie yesterday and we went to the theatre early to see the trailers. On the previous years I seldom see advertisements on the big screen. And now they took advantage. I saw many commercials of Samsung TVs, phones, Ayala places, and the Makati City promotion. I thought we go to the theatres to watch the trailers and the movie? We went early and we got in return were these? We used to only see the “please put your cell phone on silent mode” and “no videotaping”. It’s not right.

Another example is the Pacquiao fights. If you watched on pay per view, there are no interruptions and just enjoy the fight, but what about the replays? It takes I think 3-4 hours just to see the whole fight! Commercials are shown repeatedly again and again. It gets really annoying. There’s a lot of money going on there.

I asked my dad if we can subscribe the NBA Premium channel. P150 per month is not bad. It’s actually worth it. A basketball fanatic like me would enjoy the channel. The greatest thing of it is that there are no commercials when you watch a live game or event. You can even listen to the commentators talking off the air. The good thing about this channel is that when there are replays, the length of time is the same as the live telecast. There are commercials but I enjoy watching them because they are all new to me. My annual anticipation of the NBA All-Star Weekend makes me wake up in the morning just to watch it live. This weekend’s event was very fun and awesome. I enjoy watching it every year and I dream of being one of the audiences of the event. Even just watching a live NBA game in the states would be amazing.

And of course the teleseryes. If the show is watched by a big number of people, the effect is there are more commercials, and less air time for the series. It lets us hanging because of money, money, money…

Advertisements are good for marketing especially those funny and witty ones. It entertains, encourages people to buy, but some people get annoyed and too much is bad. I think everything that is too much is bad. All should be in moderation.

I Am a Filipino

The date of August 23, 2010 was a terrifying day for Filipinos who witnessed the Mendoza hostage taking. That night when I watched the news, I was shocked and felt sorry for those who were in the bus. It’s really sad to see a Filipino taking hostage on those foreigners. It has a bad effect on our country’s name. There were three flaws I noticed. First, the media was all over the place and no one there was safe. They were not supposed to cover all the scenes especially when Mendoza’s brother was uncontrollable which he saw in the TV that made him so angry.  And the brother of the hostage taker shouldn’t have taken the spotlight; it made the scenario even worse. Also I noticed our S.W.A.T. team was not that equipped which made the mission slow and unsuccessful.

As a teenager, with all of that behind, I should understand that they were in a serious situation and not just in an incident. It must be nerve racking and terrifying that there are lives in danger. And as for us Filipinos we can’t just put our country’s name in shame but we can make this as a learning process and improve what has to be improved. Let us think positive, hope for the best, and move on.

As the title said, I am a Filipino, and proud of being one. Filipinos are known for being one of the nicest people in the world. One of the examples is when we have visitors, it is automatic for us to accommodate and entertain them. That’s being hospitable. With all the problems that we have, we should think positive, work hard to solve it and move on. We have our tourist spots which are very beautiful. We have clean beaches, fresh foods, natural resources and more. We are proud for having our fellow Filipino achievers like The Pound For Pound Boxing Champion - Manny “Pacman” Paquiao, Charice Pempengco - dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as the Most Talented Girl in the World, The Magician – Efren “Bata” Reyes, 4th runner up this Miss Universe 2010 – Venus Raj, Mister Pure Energy – Gary Valenciano, CNN Hero of the Year 2009 - Efren Penaflorida and I can go on and on.  My point is there are many ways that we can be proud of being a Filipino.

As for me, to make my parents and fellow Filipinos proud, my goal first is to finish high school in La Salle Green Hills. Then finish college on one of the prestigious schools like De La Salle University to be a Future Leader. I have to study hard, study smart, and follow all the core values of my school. I realized that we have only one life to live. We don’t live in time, we live in moments. I will do all my best in order to achieve my goals. I choose to dream big and think positive. Like Donald Trump said -- "If you're going to be thinking anyway, you may as well think big."

My Inspiration

Just a few days back I got curious, I was listening to the Top 5 @ 5 radio show on Magic 89.9 and the girls behind the mic are Andi-9 and Jessica. I always listen to them every time I go home from school. This DJ, Jessica caught my attention.

During my free time, I checked out DJ Jessica Mendoza on Facebook, I looked at her pictures and she is very beautiful, has a cute smile, and very unique at the same time. I read her profile at the magic 899 website and it said that she is an Ateneo merit scholar and probably the most beautiful self-confessed dork you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting.  She can talk to you about anything from Star Wars to basketball, how’s that for diverse? :)

I started watching Ateneo games because of her (she is the courtside reporter of the Ateneo Blue Eagles) even though I am routing for the De La Salle Green Archers. Hehe: P. It all started when I posted on my Facebook that: "I watch ATENEO games just because of Jessica Mendoza” then I said to my friends to become a fan of her or (Like) her just for the heck of it. I started being a little annoying telling them to like her on Facebook because she is like my crush? :D She has beauty, brains, uniqueness, and sounds like very happy person on radio. What about a 15 year old boy dating a 20 year old lady, it seems fair enough right? Just kidding!

On checking the website of Magic 89.9, I saw there are links of blogs of DJs there, so, of course, I should take a look at Jessica’s blog first. Then I read her blogs and she is a very good writer, there are words that I have to look up in the dictionary. She’s got a love for her words I guess. :)

Then I was inspired by her writing that something came into my head: "I feel like writing a journal and improve my English, maybe this is what it feels like to be inspired". I think this is my first time. It’s like: “I want to be that person when I grow up" why not right?

Another example is I also enjoy reading someone's blog, and that is my brother Cholo. He is also a La Sallian, and is an alumnus of La Salle Green Hills and De La Salle University. He is now taking up his master’s degree in business management in China, come to think of it, I want to be like my brother, fluent in English, has great ability to express himself in writing, very sociable and very fun to talk to.

I want to have an aptitude to talk English flawlessly without thinking: "oh damn what should I say next, think! Think! Think!" something like that. Speaking fluently in English is really a big factor in school, work and when I grow up in becoming a Future Leader.

So this is the feeling of having an inspiration, really feels good to start a new goal and going to work hard for it.  My Inspiration: Miss Jessica Mendoza of Magic 89.9 :)
