I Am a Filipino

The date of August 23, 2010 was a terrifying day for Filipinos who witnessed the Mendoza hostage taking. That night when I watched the news, I was shocked and felt sorry for those who were in the bus. It’s really sad to see a Filipino taking hostage on those foreigners. It has a bad effect on our country’s name. There were three flaws I noticed. First, the media was all over the place and no one there was safe. They were not supposed to cover all the scenes especially when Mendoza’s brother was uncontrollable which he saw in the TV that made him so angry.  And the brother of the hostage taker shouldn’t have taken the spotlight; it made the scenario even worse. Also I noticed our S.W.A.T. team was not that equipped which made the mission slow and unsuccessful.

As a teenager, with all of that behind, I should understand that they were in a serious situation and not just in an incident. It must be nerve racking and terrifying that there are lives in danger. And as for us Filipinos we can’t just put our country’s name in shame but we can make this as a learning process and improve what has to be improved. Let us think positive, hope for the best, and move on.

As the title said, I am a Filipino, and proud of being one. Filipinos are known for being one of the nicest people in the world. One of the examples is when we have visitors, it is automatic for us to accommodate and entertain them. That’s being hospitable. With all the problems that we have, we should think positive, work hard to solve it and move on. We have our tourist spots which are very beautiful. We have clean beaches, fresh foods, natural resources and more. We are proud for having our fellow Filipino achievers like The Pound For Pound Boxing Champion - Manny “Pacman” Paquiao, Charice Pempengco - dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as the Most Talented Girl in the World, The Magician – Efren “Bata” Reyes, 4th runner up this Miss Universe 2010 – Venus Raj, Mister Pure Energy – Gary Valenciano, CNN Hero of the Year 2009 - Efren Penaflorida and I can go on and on.  My point is there are many ways that we can be proud of being a Filipino.

As for me, to make my parents and fellow Filipinos proud, my goal first is to finish high school in La Salle Green Hills. Then finish college on one of the prestigious schools like De La Salle University to be a Future Leader. I have to study hard, study smart, and follow all the core values of my school. I realized that we have only one life to live. We don’t live in time, we live in moments. I will do all my best in order to achieve my goals. I choose to dream big and think positive. Like Donald Trump said -- "If you're going to be thinking anyway, you may as well think big."
